How do I become a Girl Geek?

If you are a woman and love geeky things than congratulations – you are a girl geek! But if you want to make it official with us, join our mailing list, get yourself on the group on our Meetup page and come on out to an event. You can also connect with us on Twitter and Facebook.

But I am a Guy Geek – can I come?

Gents are welcome at our events and we are happy to have support from everyone in the community. The network was designed to support and encourage women in tech. We will continue to do so, and with your help, aim to create a welcoming, social environment.

How much do Girl Geeks Toronto events cost?

Our regular monthly events charge a nominal fee of $10 to help cover the cost of light refreshments and beverages for the event. Any extra money from the event helps cover operational costs (web hosting, Meetup.com fees, banking fees, etc.) which we currently pay ourselves. We are a nonprofit group and nearer the end of the year, if we have any money left over it will be donated to the Daily Bread Food Bank.

Are there refunds on tickets?

We are sorry, but we can not offer refunds for tickets purchased for our events.

What’s the format for the evening?

Our doors open at 6:30pm and you are able to immediately start meeting with others as you enjoy some hors d’oeuvres and refreshments. Our great line up of speakers begin at 7:00pm. The door will be attended until 7:15pm. If you will be late, please let us know by tweeting us so we can be sure you make it in. After the talks, we invite you to stay for some great conversation with the guests, the speakers, more refreshments and light fare. Our evening ends at 9:30pm.

I would like to present at a Girl Geeks Toronto event. Where do I sign up?

Send us a message through our contact page with a description of what you’d like to speak on, as well as a link to your website. We will consider your request and get back to you as soon as we can. Please understand that not all speakers will be accepted, and we do not cater to sales-pitch presentations. Each month we offer talks on a theme, and if you qualify we will pair you with others that would fit a specific night. Typically, we plan our events 3 to 6 months in advance.

How can I become a partner?

We love our community partners and we make sure our network knows it, too. Whether you are looking to donate in-kind, or would like to be a regular financial contributor, please contact us to discuss a relationship together.

What happened to the dinner?

In the past, the Toronto chapter of Girl Geeks held the events in establishments over dinner. We find that hosting events in venues like this may not be conducive to the needs of the presenters, and also don’t allow for as much mingling and movement around the group. Instead, we have chosen to eliminate the formal dinner and will provide light fare and refreshments in an environment that is more networking-friendly.

Are you taking pictures of the event?

Yes. Our fabulous photographers help us out by recording the evening which includes photos of those in attendance. These photographs are used to help showcase our events on our website and other social media channels.

Your attendance at our events agrees that Girl Geeks Toronto or others may take your photograph to be published for any purpose and any format for any reason.

How can I participate, beyond just attending?

We want to grow this community and that means we all can get involved, whether that is writing a blog post, taking pictures, or simply helping promote and support the group. If you are interested in being a guest blogger, an event photographer or more please get in touch with us.
